How to choose a video wall among many technologies?

Seamless video walls are a set of displays, panels or other display devices assembled together into a single screen to form a single image. The number of displays determines the size, resolution and format of the video wall image. Each display is an independent source of displaying information, the synchronization of which is carried out using special video processors. Depending on the requirements for the functionality of the video wall, the corresponding video processor is configured. Video walls in their various manifestations are a very convenient tool for distributing information, entertainment, advertising messages in the form of video or text.

Video walls are a popular marketing tool and a technological advertising and information medium that is increasingly used in outdoor advertising, Digital Signage, in control rooms and situation centers, in retail, as well as for monitoring technological processes in industry and for video conferencing in business. The scope of video wall applications is growing every day largely due to the emergence of new technologies and tools that allow you to implement both simple and the most unusual and complex video wall layout options.

Application areas of video walls

The main purpose of video walls is to create a large, large-format image. Therefore, they are used where it is necessary to have large dimensions, high brightness in combination with high image detail and bright colors. For example:

  • Conference halls – for demonstrating presentations and video conferences
  • Assembly halls – for decorating the hall and for broadcasting a stage performance on the screen
  • Shopping centers – video walls are ideal for displaying advertising
  • Meeting rooms – for displaying incoming video signals of participants in a remote video conference
  • Dispatch services and situation centers – as a large screen accumulating all available information that comes from various channels
  • Control centers for large industrial facilities – for displaying process parameters on the screen
  • In a television studio, a video wall is an ideal solution for broadcasting programs and events
  • Museum installations – provide an atmosphere and convey creative ideas
  • In the field of education – for holding lectures, presentations, scientific conferences
  • Interactive systems – can be used in educational institutions
  • and much more

Professional video walls have an extremely high image resolution, it can significantly exceed the resolution of the most modern projector or TV. This is due to the fact that the video wall consists of several panels, the resolution of each of which currently reaches 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels), and the total resolution of the video wall is the sum of the resolutions of the panels that make up the video wall.

Video processor, also known as video wall controller

A video processor or video controller is a hardware and software complex that allows, using specialized software, to quickly and efficiently combine several video signal sources connected to the video processor into a single virtual working space (resembles the extended desktop mode on a regular PC) and display the already combined image or video on a common screen. A piece of the received image is then transmitted directly to each of the video wall screens by the matrix switcher.

What should you pay attention to when choosing a video processor?

The configuration and functionality of the processor is selected based on the customer’s requirements. In some cases, one set of functions will be needed, in others – another. Some processors allow you to create multi-window modes, combining the image from several signal sources connected to the controller into a single image (the principle of operation of a quadrator). Other multitasking devices allow you to process, scale and even move the image of a particular connected video signal in real time by pressing a button on the computer, in specialized controller software, without losing the resolution of the final image. And some video processors have all the functions at the same time.

Thus, depending on the technical content, characteristics and functionality of the video processor, its price is determined.

Seamless video walls

A type of video wall in which the joints between individual screens are almost invisible or completely absent are called seamless video walls. On video walls with narrow seams, any image looks truly unified, not divided into separate cells by seams and frames between displays. Therefore, seamless video walls are used where even the slightest compromises in terms of content display quality are unacceptable.
